Study Finds Humans Are Worse Than Radiation For Chernobyl Animals

Slashdot: Science - Fetched: October 5th, 2015, 8:00pm UTC
derekmead writes: A study published today in Current Biology shows that wildlife in the Chernobyl exclusion zone is actually more abundant than it was before the disaster. According to the authors, led by Portsmouth University professor of environmental science Jim Smith, the recovery is due to the removal of the single biggest pressure on wildlifemdash;humans. "The wildlife at Chernobyl is very likely better than it was before the accident, not because radiation is good for animals, but because human occupation is much worse, rdquo; Portsmouth University professor of environmental science Jim Smith says. ldquo; We were trying to emphasize that this study is a remarkable illustration of an obvious, but important message, rdquo; he said. ldquo; It is ordinary human habitation and use (farming, forestry, hunting) of land which does most ecological damage.rdquo;pdiv class="share_submission" style="position:relative;" a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Study+Finds+Humans+Are+Worse+Than+Radiation+For+Chernobyl+Animals%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F1VzRYgx"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F15%2F10%2F05%2F1949201%2Fstudy-finds-humans-are-worse-than-radiation-for-chernobyl-animals%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/15/10/05/1949201/study-finds-humans-are-worse-than-radiation-for-chernobyl-animals?utm_source=slashdotamp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"//a /div/ppa href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/15/10/05/1949201/study-finds-humans-are-worse-than-radiation-for-chernobyl-animals?utm_source=rss1.0moreanonamp;utm_medium=feed"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdotScience/~4/V3p9KcjEbpQ" height="1" width="1" alt=""/

DNA Vaccine Sterilizes Mice, Could Lead To One-Shot Birth Control For Cats, Dogs

Slashdot: Science - Fetched: October 5th, 2015, 8:00pm UTC
sciencehabit writes: Animal birth control could soon be just a shot away. A new injection makes male and female mice infertile by tricking their muscles into producing hormone-blocking antibodies. If the approach works in dogs and cats, researchers say, it could be used to neuter and spay pets and to control reproduction in feral animal populations. A similar approach could one day spur the development of long-term birth control options for humans.pdiv class="share_submission" style="position:relative;" a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=DNA+Vaccine+Sterilizes+Mice%2C+Could+Lead+To+One-Shot+Birth+Control++For+Cats%2C+Dogs%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F1L2WVEj"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F15%2F10%2F05%2F1941234%2Fdna-vaccine-sterilizes-mice-could-lead-to-one-shot-birth-control-for-cats-dogs%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/15/10/05/1941234/dna-vaccine-sterilizes-mice-could-lead-to-one-shot-birth-control-for-cats-dogs?utm_source=slashdotamp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"//a /div/ppa href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/15/10/05/1941234/dna-vaccine-sterilizes-mice-could-lead-to-one-shot-birth-control-for-cats-dogs?utm_source=rss1.0moreanonamp;utm_medium=feed"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdotScience/~4/bUDXE5K0aos" height="1" width="1" alt=""/
