The Science and Politics Behind Colony Collapse Disorder; Is the Crisis Over?

Slashdot: Science - Fetched: July 24th, 2015, 1:00am UTC
iONiUM writes: An article at the Globe and Mail claims that there is no longer any Honeybee crises, and that the deaths of the Honeybees previously was a one-off, or possibly non-cyclical occurrence (caused by neonics or nature mdash; the debate is still out). The data used is that from Stats Canada which claims "the number of honeybee colonies is at a record high [in Canada]." Globally, the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization says that "worldwide bee populations have rebounded to a record high." The story reports: "I have great news for honey lovers everywhere. The Canadian honeybee industry is thriving. Despite those headlines about mass die-offs and and killer pesticides, the number of honeybee colonies is at a record high. Last year, according to Statistics Canada, nearly 700,000 honeybee colonies produced $200-million worth of honey. Bee survival rates have rebounded even in Ontario, which was hard hit by unusually high winter die-offs."pdiv class="share_submission" style="position:relative;" a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=The+Science+and+Politics+Behind+Colony+Collapse+Disorder%3B+Is+the+Crisis+Over%3F%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F1CXJNlm"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F15%2F07%2F23%2F2024212%2Fthe-science-and-politics-behind-colony-collapse-disorder-is-the-crisis-over%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/15/07/23/2024212/the-science-and-politics-behind-colony-collapse-disorder-is-the-crisis-over?utm_source=slashdotamp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"//a /div/ppa href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/15/07/23/2024212/the-science-and-politics-behind-colony-collapse-disorder-is-the-crisis-over?utm_source=rss1.0moreanonamp;utm_medium=feed"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdotScience/~4/NRCuPnHaAaA" height="1" width="1" alt=""/
