Stem Cell Treatment Found Effective For Rare Brain Disorder

Slashdot: Science - Fetched: October 11th, 2012, 8:30pm EDT
sciencehabit writes "Four young boys with a rare, fatal brain condition have made it through a dangerous ordeal. Scientists have safely transplanted human neural stem cells into their brains. Twelve months after the surgeries, the boys have more myelinmdash;a fatty insulating protein that coats nerve fibers and speeds up electric signals between neuronsmdash;and show improved brain function, a new study in Science Translational Medicine reports. The preliminary trial paves the way for future research into potential stem cell treatments for the disorder, which overlaps with more common diseases such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis."pdiv class="share_submission" style="position:relative;" a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Stem+Cell+Treatment+Found+Effective+For+Rare+Brain+Disorder%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FTk5XRx"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F12%2F10%2F11%2F2313207%2Fstem-cell-treatment-found-effective-for-rare-brain-disorder%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/10/11/2313207/stem-cell-treatment-found-effective-for-rare-brain-disorder?utm_source=slashdotamp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"//a /div/ppa href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/10/11/2313207/stem-cell-treatment-found-effective-for-rare-brain-disorder?utm_source=rss1.0moreanonamp;utm_medium=feed"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lt-YT0GJ8LjwpAwb3a9-YSlP3NA/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lt-YT0GJ8LjwpAwb3a9-YSlP3NA/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lt-YT0GJ8LjwpAwb3a9-YSlP3NA/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/lt-YT0GJ8LjwpAwb3a9-YSlP3NA/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdotScience/~4/KUn_vY7Yr94" height="1" width="1"/
