"Out of Africa" Theory Called Into Question By Originator

Slashdot: Science - Fetched: September 17th, 2012, 4:30pm EDT
Amiga Trombone writes "Christopher Stringer is one of the world's foremost paleoanthropologists. He is a founder and most powerful advocate of the leading theory concerning our evolution: Recent African Origin or 'Out of Africa.' He now calls the theory into question: 'I'm thinking a lot about species concepts as applied to humans, about the "Out of Africa" model, and also looking back into Africa itself. I think the idea that modern humans originated in Africa is still a sound concept. Behaviorally and physically, we began our story there, but I've come around to thinking that it wasn't a simple origin. Twenty years ago, I would have argued that our species evolved in one place, maybe in East Africa or South Africa. There was a period of time in just one place where a small population of humans became modern, physically and behaviourally. Isolated and perhaps stressed by climate change, this drove a rapid and punctuational origin for our species. Now I don't think it was that simple, either within or outside of Africa.'"pdiv class="share_submission" style="position:relative;" a class="slashpop" href="http://twitter.com/home?status=%22Out+of+Africa%22+Theory+Called+Into+Question+By+Originator%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FQxbdBM"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a a class="slashpop" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F12%2F09%2F17%2F2020230%2Fout-of-africa-theory-called-into-question-by-originator%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a class="nobg" href="http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/09/17/2020230/out-of-africa-theory-called-into-question-by-originator?utm_source=slashdotamp;utm_medium=googleplus" onclick="javascript:window.open(this.href,'', 'menubar=no,toolbar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes,height=600,width=600');return false;"img src="http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png" alt="Share on Google+"//a /div/ppa href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/12/09/17/2020230/out-of-africa-theory-called-into-question-by-originator?utm_source=rss1.0moreanonamp;utm_medium=feed"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/xUfGHGF2q8jzMJAfSPeyJMkNe_s/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/xUfGHGF2q8jzMJAfSPeyJMkNe_s/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/xUfGHGF2q8jzMJAfSPeyJMkNe_s/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/xUfGHGF2q8jzMJAfSPeyJMkNe_s/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdotScience/~4/0woljAF8mN8" height="1" width="1"/
