Editor: As a microarray analyst, I can attest that this kind of tool is totally invaluable. When you try to understand the role of a regulated gene / protein and it has 55 synonyms, manual Pubmed queries get out of hand pretty quickly...

A little over one year after the original research paper was published in Bioinformatics, PharmaDM is pleased to announce immediate availability of its new GPSDB, the Gene and Protein Synonyms DataBase.

Already during the one-year test period, during which the database was significantly refined, this new production-quality release of the online thesaurus of gene and protein names has proved invaluable to biologists
worldwide.

Simple in concept, the online query tool aggregates information from over a dozen biological source databases. A single query returns all synonyms for a given name, conveniently grouped per semantic category. The user can
quickly evaluate which semantics are appropriate, then send all synonyms to the familiar PubMed website in a single mouse click.

GPSDB is the first publicly available result from the three-year pan-European BioMinT project, which was funded in part by the European Commission. The research was performed by Europe's leading biotech centers,
including the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) and Manchester University. As a partner in the project, PharmaDM holds exploitation rights on the outcomes of the project.

GPSDB is available from http://biomint.pharmadm.com.
